The Programs

For Children and Youth

The goal of the classes, whether they are in a classroom format or a private tutoring session, is to blend learning and play. This is done in order to draw on the interest of the children and make learning a new language fun and exciting. The sessions will have children learn and sing Chinese songs, play Chinese games, read and recite Chinese poems, and learn more about the history of China. The classes will draw on the Easy Steps to Chinese textbook series and lead the children through the 8 volume set on a weekly basis. 

Children Mandarin Level I
This class is the first step to building a strong foundation in Chinese. The class helps students learn how to greet others in Chinese, talk about families, and begin to carry conversations in Chinese. The class also helps students become more familiar with the pronunciation and culture of China.
Children Mandarin Level II
This class helps students grow from the foundations they built in the first class. The focus of this class is to help students with more advanced vocabulary and to begin to understand the structure and grammar of the Chinese language. The students are also introduced to more extensive reading and writing with Chinese Characters.
Children Mandarin Level III
Moving from Mandarin Level 2, students are now asked to expand their speaking skills to handle speaking with proper tones and dealing with more complex forms. Students should also expect for this class to have longer conversations and dialogs in Chinese.
Children Mandarin Level IV
Mandarin Level 4, asks the student to move to more advanced sentence structures and dialogs. Students will be asked to read and speak complex dialogs and they should expect to build a more expansive vocabulary.

Having finished all the eight books, students will be exposed to about 1,600 Chinese characters; read simple articles in newspapers, magazines and on the Internet; communicate spontaneously in Chinese both orally and in writing

For Adults

The goal of the adult classes and private sessions is to meet you at your Chinese level and take you to where you want or need to go. With private lessons the lesson plan will be highly tailored to your needs so that if you are a traveling business person, we will spend less time on tourist interactions and more time on business interactions. The classroom sessions will be more holistic in their approach and touch on all aspects of interacting in Chinese. The classes will use parts of the Integrated Chinese: Simplified Characters textbook series. The focus of the program is more on the spoken language and less on the written language. I want you to be able to take what you learn and be able to interact with people you meet in China.

Adults Mandarin Level I
The Adults Mandarin Level I class is for students eager to learn the basics of Chinese. You will learn greetings and basic conversational skills in order to shop, order food, and travel in China. The course is designed to get you started reading and writing the Chinese language as well as working on your conversational skills.
Adults Mandarin Level II
The next step up in difficulty is the Adults Mandarin Level II class. In this class students will grow your speaking, reading, and listening skills through more advanced dialogs and interactions. This level also introduces students to more advanced grammatical structures in the Chinese language.
Adults Mandarin Level III
The third level is designed for students who have already built up a moderate level of understanding of Chinese grammar and vocabulary and would like to expand their knowledge and communication skills into more complex topics. At the end of the course, students should know at least 1,200 Chinese characters.
Adults Mandarin Level IV
The final level is for students that are able to function well in the Chinese language, but want to continue to develop their language skills.In particular, student entering this class will want to expand their vocabulary and would like to continue to push themselves to improve their speaking, pronunication, reading, and writing skills.
